Welcome to the South Shore Homestead-House, your private cottage retreat.
We are happy to have you as our guests and hope your stay is comfortable, and rewarding. This cottage was designed for professionals, traveling healthcare workers, remote workers, and others seeking a peaceful residential environment surrounded by nature.
You are welcome to stroll around the property, have guests and socialize in the capacity that feels comfortable to you. There are other residents living on the property and we respect each other’s privacy, while still encouraging everyone to utilize the shared outdoor spaces.
Please review this Welcome Guide carefully upon arrival. It contains important information about the property, local resources, and house operations.
House Essentials
Entry Instructions
Enter on NE South Shore road via the East-side gate next to the field. The gate can remain open during daylight hours, or closed if you prefer.
Follow the driveway down towards the cottage. There is a circular turnaround at the first tree on the left. You can enter the circular drive, wind-around, and back-in your driveway for easier unloading.
Wifi Password is located in your Welcome Basket.
Heating & Cooling
Heating System:
Thermostat is on the wall next to the stairs. Turn ON / HEAT / FAN. Arrow up or down to set the temperature desired. Auto or Hold temp as you prefer.
There is an additional Heat Dish in the closet if you want more focused space heat.
The furnace is located in the kitchen behind the louver doors. Close windows and doors when the heat is on.
Cooling System:
There are 2 portable air-conditioning units; one up and one downstairs. Power ON / COOL/ FAN (as you prefer) Arrow up or down to set the cooling desired.
There are additional fans in the closets if you want more direct circulation. Close windows and doors when the air-conditioner is on.
You can achieve better climate control when you close the upstairs door and bathroom door. Close the hall curtain to help separate the upper and lower climate zones.
Washer/Dryer
Location:
Washer and Dryer are located in the downstairs bathroom
Basic Instructions:
Washer Dial to the Right. Dryer Dial to the Left. Use Green Regular timed settings for regular linens. Use other setting for more customized washing and drying.
Avoid overloading machines, and report any issues immediately.

Parking
Tenant(s) parking is on the gravel on the side of the cottage. Pending the size of your vehicle(s), parking can be stacked in the gravel driveway or overflow at the bottom of the circular turn-around on the gravel. Do not block the asphalt driveway.
Guests can park on the street, or in one of your designated parking spaces if available.
House Systems
Fuse Box:
The breaker box is located behind the chalk board in the kitchen. Flip the breaker back on, if you trip a fuse. Notify the landlord if you have continued issues with any GFI or breakers.
Sewer Sump Pump:
The sewer system runs through a grinder sump pump, and up to the city sewer system. The pump control is the black box in the kitchen. Under no circumstances should you unplug this pump. An alarm will sound, if the pump becomes disabled. Avoid issues and do NOT flush anything except toilet paper into the plumbing system.
Water Heater Location:
Water Heater is in the upstairs Bathroom Closet opposite the toilet
Portland tap water is safe for drinking and cooking. Outdoor water taps are located around the house Please notify landlord if you see any standing, pooling or dripping water in or around the house.

Entry Door Access
Open the pet gate to your private deck entrance. The door will be left unlocked for your initial arrival. Your unique door code will be sent to you in advance.
This code will expire at check-out. There will also be 2 manual door keys in your welcome basket.
The side and balcony French doors have a traditional lock and screen lock. You will be given keys for both.

Mail Deliveries
You will receive a mailbox key to use as needed. If you will be receiving mail, expect your mail to remain in the box until you have collected it. If Landlord receives your mail or packages, they will notify you via text as to where to retrieve your post.
Larger packages and deliveries can be received at either of the two front porches. It is your responsibility to retrieve your own packages.

The property borders natural habitat and wetlands. Your private yard is gated with a 5' fence for you and your pet's safety.

Delta Park/Vanport MAX Light rail Station: YELLOW LINE
(Only 1.5 mi. 6 min.)
Park for free and get on at Delta Park/Vanport. Ride through Historic Kenton, the Rose Quarter, across the Willamette River, past the Skidmore Fountain/Saturday Market, all the way to PSU Campus. You can easily transfer to the Green and Orange lines.
TRI-MET BUS LINE #6
Get on at Jubitz and follow MLK Blvd through North and NE Portland all the way downtown, to the Goose Hollow District.
Smoking Policy
Smoking, vaping, marijuana use, candles, incense, and open flames are prohibited inside the cottage.
Outdoor smoking policy:
Smoking legal substances is allowed 10 feet from doors and windows in fire-resistant chairs/tables only. Keep smoke away from children. Properly and safely dispose of paraphernalia. No candles or open flames allowed.

Your hosts were born, raised, and operated several businesses in Portland Oregon over a 40-year span. They’ve watched the city evolve as they brought up their family on South Shore. Now with eight grandchildren, their entertainment options have diversified greatly.

Native Portland brothers have renovated old buildings into venues, restaurants hotels and bars. Keeping the authentic building vibe, they brought in local artists to color the halls. At the Kennady School you can grab a slice and beer and watch a matinee movie in the auditorium, lunch in the courtyard cafeteria, dinner in the Cypress classroom, catch a concert in the gymnasium, cocktails in the Honors or Detention Bars, games in the Boiler room, all while hunting the building to find the secret hidden bar. Stroll the halls with your drinks taking in the art, showcasing the original teachers, students and Kennedy School-yard charm, on the old cattle trail of NE 33rd Ave. Neighbors can use their soaking pool at limited hours as well.

McMenamins Edgefield
An original poor farm renovated into a hotel, with multiple restaurants, a golf course, winery, brewery, spa and outdoor concerts on the lawn. The gardens, grounds and building arts, are a thing from Alice in Wonderland honoring the poor, forgotten elders of our past.

Don’t laugh, it’s a pretty convenient drive-by location for nearby amenities. Only .5 mi and 3 minutes from home whether you’re coming or going, or when you just don’t want to go anywhere. Jubitz includes 26-acres of amenities: A good cinema, lively western trucker bar, with concerts and line dancing, restaurant with large portions, deli with custom sandwiches, desserts and coffee to-go, Minute Mart, Dog-Wash, Hotel, Fuel Station, Postal Place and more…and it’s locally family-owned.

Portland has several parts that make up the city, (N/NE/S/SE/SW) and they’re divided into districts. They each have their own unique local vibe for food, neighborhood culture, shopping and rooted history. It gives Portland the feeling of many small communities, rather than one unified city. Check out as many as you can, to see how they differ in foods, friendliness, history, shopping, arts and entertainment. We love them all for different reasons.

Neighborhood Children’s Arboretum (closest)
Just one block South. Enter from Meadow and walk on pavement just to the bridge, turn left into the trees, and follow the ring- trail along the wooded slough. Look for turtles, cayote, beavers and deer.

Forrest Park
Cross the Willamette River and you’ll find 5,200 acres of trails. Starting downtown-ish, just head west. Choose from countless nearby trails with different levels of elevation and experience. Many are dog-friendly. Check the All-Trails App for the trails that suit your preference.

The Gorge
Head east on Marine drive and you enter 'The Gateway to the Gorge’ hiking. So many great trails with canyons, waterfalls, gorge views and shady mossy tree cover. Absolutely stunning, any time of year.

ON THE river

Marine Drive multi-use riverside pathway: (nearby 4 minutes)
Walk, run, skate or bike the waterfront pathway. Park at the dock for $5 and spend the day at the beach and along the pathway admiring the river, sailboats, plane-spotting, kite flying and people watching. Watch for river seals, turtles, giant sturgeon Eagles and Blue Herron. Dogs are welcome.
